Program Name: 2. Math and Science Teacher Training Workshops

 

This 25-hour workshop is offered to math and science teachers. The workshop provides them with training within a framework of a communicative teaching approach. It strongly emphasizes interactive instructional strategies, which build up trainees’ teaching competencies and skills when presenting and teaching together with planning classroom tasks and activities, as well as assessment concepts, forms and rubrics that are instrumental to

students’ motivation, progress and achievement. No OEPT is required before attending the workshop.

 

  1. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, the trainees will be able to:
    1. Demonstrate a supportive classroom environment by establishing classroom rapport 

    1. Apply effective standards for Learners’ behavior to ensure efficient classroom management. 
    2. Use appropriate classroom grouping to promote an organized and communicative teaching approach 
    3. Make the shift from a Teacher Centered to a Learner Centered approach to teaching 
    4. Use proper lesson staging to demonstrate a supportive classroom environment 
    5. Demonstrate a supportive classroom environment by adopting different warmers and lead-ins to enhance their teaching 
    6. Use elicitation effectively in teaching practices. 
    7. Use concept checking effectively in teaching practices 
    8. Organize the board in a way that enhances learning 
    9. Use concept checking effectively in teaching practices 
    10. Set up a classroom activity effectively to ensure its smooth and effective running. 
    11. Use a variety of teaching strategies for giving feedback and corrections.
    12. Conduct a math or science communicative mini-lesson through all its stages in 12-15 minutes 
    13. Apply all the above mentioned strategies in their teaching practice 
    14. Identify different test item types 
    15. Apply key assessment concepts on different test item types

    Managing Learner Behavior
    Classroom Grouping: Group Work, Pair Work, Mingling Activities and Individual Work. Shifting from a Teacher Centered to a Learner Centered Classroom: Lecturing versus

    Interactive Teaching
     

     

    Lesson Staging and Teaching Strategies:

    • Stages of a Lesson: Pre-presentation, Presentation and Production Stages Pre-presentation Strategies:

     

    Icebreakers, recyclers and warmers or lead-ins. Presentation Strategies:

    Elicitation: How to extract the new lesson from the learners using interactive techniques. Checking Understanding.
    Board Organization

    Production Strategies:

    Effective Setting up of a Classroom Activity.
    Giving and Taking Feedback on Learners’ Production Activities Error Correction Techniques.

    • The 3 pillars of assessment: Fairness, Reliability and Validity
